Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by the word association when she was a child. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teenage years she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot at the third time made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the when she finished her studies, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually being a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her show in 1996, soon gained her attention.
